the background ships is made by simply apply the material to tree intersect planes:

I learned: use Direct Location to animate particles

(Direct Location: This module sets the location of this emitter's particles over their lifetime.

    Location: This is a vector distribution (should be a curve) that specifies the location of the particle.

    When using a curve, this is calculated by finding the value of the distribution for the current RelativeLife of the particle.)
